Summary

AI-generated · Jan 30, 2026

Improvements to about 56.5 miles of roads inside Mojave National Preserve to improve safety and visitor access. Work includes resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation; Kelso-Cima Road (19.3 miles) and South Kelbaker Road (22.3 miles) will undergo full-depth reclamation with new asphalt, widened to 26 feet, with select realignments, and safety enhancements such as rumble strips, signing, pavement markings, and paved pullouts. Morningstar Mine Road (14.9 miles) will be fully reclaimed with a surface-course aggregate, with realignment at the Kelso-Cima and Morningstar intersection. Major quantities indicate roughly 110,000 tons of asphalt concrete pavement, 133,000 tons of roadway aggregate, 81,000 tons of surface aggregate, 110,000 cubic yards of excavation, 49 miles of full-depth reclamation (method 2, 6-inch depth), 17,000 linear feet of concrete barrier for low-water crossings, 44 miles of fencing, tortoise barrier and crossing structures, and 12,000 cubic yards of rip rap.

The project is in a natural-resource sensitive area, with environmental constraints that will affect construction scheduling and methods. Emphasis will be placed on meeting safety and visitor relations needs, traffic control, and timely completion. Prior experience on similarly large highway-rehabilitation projects is required, with an estimated construction duration of 24 to 30 months.
