Technical Demonstration Unit for Fission Surface Power INL-25-015
Summary
AI-generated · Aug 24, 2025Development and testing of a Technical Demonstration Unit (TDU) to mature technology and reduce risk for NASA's Fission Surface Power program. The TDU will be a non-nuclear, electrically heated representation of a flight system, designed to demonstrate integrated subsystems in a representative environment and to generate functional and performance data to inform technical risk. It is intended to be tested at NASA Glenn Research Center, using flight-relevant materials and processes where possible. No submittals are requested at this time; a follow-on notice will provide a Request for Proposals with detailed TDU requirements.
Updated information: The 10 kW FSP TDU discussed in the information session will not result in an RFP. NASA directs pursuit of a higher-power system to be implemented in a future procurement action, with more information to follow.
1. INTRODUCTION Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC (BEA) Management & Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) owned Idaho National Laboratory (INL), is preparing a solicitation in support the NASA Fission Surface Power program. This solicitation targets development and testing of a Technical Demonstration Unit (TDU) to support technology maturation, and risk reduction. The FSP?TDU is intended to be a non?nuclear, electrically heated system that will demonstrate the feasibility, functionality, and performance of integrated subsystems in a representative environment to advance relevant technology elements for the Fission Surface Power (FSP) program. The FSP?TDU is intended to represent a flight system (FSP?FS), but utilizing flightrelevant materials and processes where possible. This TDU is intended to be tested at NASAGlenn Research Center. The integrated subsystem test will produce the functional and performance data used to inform the technical risk of the FSP project. INL, in coordination with NASA, intends to host an open information virtual session related to this upcoming solicitation on July 31. Meeting appointment will be provided upon request, please make your request to fsp@inl.gov or Register at https://inlhrfedramp.gov1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aW3GdE0EkZiH5Gu. 2. BACKGROUND This pre?solicitation notice is not a request for bid. A follow?on notice will be provided with a Request For Proposals (RFP), and will include proposal details and TDU requirements. This presolicitation notice is intended to generate interest for potential industry partners, and allow interested parties time to prepare for the formal RFP request 3. SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS No submittals are requested at this time.
