Summary

AI-generated · Aug 25, 2025

One oceanographic current meter (brand-name Aanderaa or equivalent) is required for marine mammal research to measure currents, oxygen levels, and pressures as part of tracking cetacean populations in the Bering and Chukchi seas. The contractor must deliver one unit to the Seattle, WA facility, and capability statements should demonstrate how the product meets all requirements, including the place of origin/manufacture.

Technical specifications include: two-second sampling intervals with up to four analog sensor inputs (0-5 V); Broadband Zpulse multi-frequency Doppler current sensor technology; depth rating to 300 meters; speed range 0-300 cm/s with 0.1 mm/s resolution and 0.15 cm/s mean accuracy; an oxygen optode (0-500 μM, ±2.5 μM/L accuracy); a pressure sensor (0-4,000 kPa, 0.01% accuracy); and a temperature sensor (-5 to 40 C, 0.1 C accuracy). Capability statements should address how the proposed product meets these specs, include origin/manufacture information, and any questions or comments about the statement of need. This is not a request for quotations.

STATEMENT OF NEED Aanderaa Oceanographic Current Meter or equivalent PURPOSE: Research of populations of cetaceans and odontocetes is a core mission of the NMFS Marine Mammal Laboratory. Researchers track populations in part by correlating their distribution to oceanographic and seascape features to monitor ecosystem health. As a part of tracking marine ecosystem health, researchers measure ocean currents, oxygen levels, and pressures. BACKGROUND: NMFS engages in research projects which are designed to target critical ecological factors which affect marine mammal survivability, lifespan, and behaviors. The research will track distributions and development of marine mammal populations in the Bering and Chukchi seas. SCOPE: The Contractor shall furnish and deliver the oceanographic current meter listed in Statement of Need. Delivery needs to be made no later than 15-January-2026 to the NMFS Research Facility in Seattle, Washington. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS/SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS: The Contractor shall furnish and deliver one (1) oceanographic current meter that includes & meets the following specifications/salient characteristics: Two-second sound recording intervals and up to four analog sensor inputs (0-5v) Broadband Zpulse multi-frequency Doppler current sensor technology Must be immersible (depth-rated) in the marine environment up to 300m Speed range of 0-300 cm/s with a 0.1 mm/s resolution and mean accuracy of 0.15 cm/s Must include an oxygen optode with a range of 0-500 ?M and accuracy of +/- 2.5 ?M/L Pressure sensor must have an absolute pressure range of 0-4,000 kPa with accuracy of 0.01% Temperature sensor must have a range of -5 to 40 C, with an accuracy of 0.1 C Place of delivery: Seattle, Washington USA.
