To address emerald ash borer–infested trees at the Tomah VA Medical Center, thirteen large green ash trees in high-traffic, near-historic-building areas must be completely removed. Work must be performed with lift bucket trucks and cranes (no climbers), taking trees down in pieces with proper rigging to protect surrounding historic structures, landscaping, power lines, and other assets. All debris—including branches, leaves, bark, wood chips, stumps six inches below ground—must be disposed of with full documentation in compliance with municipal, county, and state regulations, and the site must be cleaned daily with larger logs and debris moved to a safe area or off-site. A safety perimeter and detoured pedestrian/vehicle flow are required, and work may be halted if protected birds’ nests or potential cultural artifacts are discovered, until directed to resume.
