Summary

AI-generated · Jan 16, 2026

USGS seeks market information from qualified firms capable of supplying an X-ray fluorescence core scanner that can analyze both marine sediment and mineral cores, for wet and dry samples, with high precision across heavy and light elements (from magnesium through uranium or better). The instrument should handle core lengths up to 1.5 meters at 1 mm resolution or better, provide appropriate X-ray safety shielding, offer energy resolution of 3% or better, and include an RGB camera that images at 50 micrometers or better in tandem with the XRF data. It must come with a suitable X-ray tube (reliable lifetime, appropriate power, and shielding), a means to hold samples during analysis, NIST-certified reference materials, data collection and analysis software including spectral deconvolution, and a one-year standard warranty plus installation and user training.

This is a market research effort to determine industry capability and does not constitute a request for quote or proposal or a commitment to award. Interested parties should submit capabilities statements describing how their product meets the salient characteristics.

X-Ray Fluorescence Core Scanner SOURCES SOUGHT The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting market research to determine the availability of qualified businesses capable of providing an X-ray Fluorescence Scanner as described in the Salient Characteristics listed below. This Sources Sought announcement is not a request for quote or proposal and the Government is not committed to award of a purchase order or contract pursuant to this announcement. The information resulting from this market research is simply for planning purposes to assist the Government in determining its acquisition strategy. The Government will not pay for any costs incurred in the preparation of information in response to this notice. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code 334516 Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing and associated size standard 1,000 apply to this announcement, along with PSC code 6645 Time Measuring Instruments. All responsible sources may submit a capabilities statement detailing the ability of their service to meet the statement of work included with this announcement.
