How The Government Can Assist Small Businesses Obtain Government Contracts

Understanding The Federal Contracting System General Services Administration, also known as GSA, is responsible for acquiring the goods and services needed by federal agencies. The United States government needs everything and is a super consumer worth $500 billion. The government uses schedules to purchase goods and services. When there is a need in an agency it is called a schedule award. These are great opportunities for small businesses. A company needs to bid for the award. Once the award is won, the winning bid signifies a signed contract between the business and the government. This means that learning how to bid for these government contracts is extremely important to be successful with this lucrative customer. Small Businesses Are Given Special Consideration When It Comes To Government Contracts In many markets, small businesses are often outcompeted by larger organizations that often have access to almost unlimited resources. This set aside actually might increase a small business’s chances of winning a lucrative bid. The federal government is required to set aside at least 23 percent of its total spending specifically for small businesses. Several small businesses have made a fortune just on federal government contract awards. The Federal Government Offers Great Opportunities For Many Types Of Businesses The government designates a portion of the contracts for women-owned small businesses, small disadvantaged businesses, companies within historically underutilized business zones (HUBZone), and service-disabled, veteran-owned small organizations. This allows underserved groups to have a real chance to get awarded lucrative government contracts. Counseling The government also offers more personalized guidance through counseling. There are also commercial counseling programs. The Procurement Technical Assistance Centers or PTACs offer valuable assistance to small businesses. They can be found in educational institutions. These counselors are well known for their high level of expertise. There is also a government-backed membership organization called the National Contracts Management Association.  The PTACs help small businesses locate marketing opportunities and can assist with various e-commerce issues. They can also help you prepare financial reports, procurement forms, and contractual paperwork, as well as guide quality assurance. Most of their services are free though there can be a nominal charge for services such as electronic bid matching. You can contact one of the regional directors at The Association of Procurement Technical Assistance Centers for more information. The website www.sellingtothegovernment.net could help you to locate a PTAC near you. National Contracts Management Association The National Contracts Management Association (NCMA) is a government-supported organization that was started years ago (1959). It was started to help companies do business with the federal government. The organization provides certification programs and educational seminars for small businesses. They also print a monthly magazine called Contract Management. The fee for new membership is $120 and can be thereafter renewed at $100 per year. Small Business Administration Certifications A Small Business Administration certification is a great way for your business to stand out in the marketplace. Certifications can help you gain access to specialized funding and scholarships, allow you to compete for set-aside contracts, and can be a great bonus to potential clients. Here are some certifications to consider for your small business: Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program (WOSBs) 8(a) Business Development Program The Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business Concern Procurement Program(SDVOSB) Historically Underutilized Business Zone Program (HUBZone) The Federal Government Has Government Personnel That Are Strictly Utilized to Help Small Businesses Be More Competitive In Securing Government Contracts Here are some examples: SBA Procurement Center Representative (PCR): Procurement Center Representatives are often located at a major government buying office, even though they technically work for the Small Business Administration. They will identify items and services that could be produced or provided by small businesses and try to get them “set aside” for small businesses, which means that only small businesses can bid for the contracts.  Competition Advocate: This person is responsible for promoting full and open competition at high management levels in the major buying offices. They are supposed to challenge overly restrictive statements of work and contract clauses that can prove to be burdensome. They also try to expand competition for items by offering challenges to requirements that are not deemed necessary for the performance or essential physical characteristics.  Small Business Specialists (SBS): The law requires that every government buying location must have a Small Business Specialist. These specialists work specifically with small businesses to help them do business with that office. Larger government offices might have full staff while smaller offices might only have one part-time employee assigned to this role. Major government buying offices have full-time staff, while smaller offices have a part-time person assigned to that task.  SBA Commercial Marketing Representative (CMR): Commercial Marketing Representatives keep track of large companies doing work for their departments. These representatives are often the go-to person for fantastic subcontracting opportunities for small businesses.  Government Funding As we have stated before, the United States government is one of the wealthiest and most powerful clients in the world. However, no one has unlimited resources. Administrations change and that can often mean a shift in funding priorities. For example, if the government is into energy conservation, that might mean a lot of contracts for those who develop energy alternatives. If a new administration comes into power that values different things, then the funding for alternative energy initiatives might be decreased. One of the best ways to combat this is by supporting politicians that understand and promote your type of business. It is important to keep an eye on the political atmosphere and make sure that your voice is heard. How Do You Get Started Working With The Government? SAM stands for System Award Management. This set aside actually might increase a small business’s chances of winning a lucrative bid. The federal government is required to set aside at least 23 percent of its total spending specifically for small businesses. Several small businesses have made a fortune just on federal government contract awards. What Qualifies As A Small Business? To be considered a small business, a company has to meet the following requirements: A business must meet small business size standards. Part of a business must be within the U.S. A business must operate mainly within the U.S. or make a significant contribution to the U.S. economy through the payment of taxes or the use of American products, materials, or labor. A business must be independently owned and operated. A business cannot be dominant in its field on a national basis. The first thing a small business must do to qualify for government contracts is to register with the SAM Directory. Make Sure You Receive Certification To be eligible to compete for woman-owned small business set-asides or receive sole-source awards, you must either be certified by a Small Business Administration (SBA) approved Third-Party Certifier (TPC), OR self-certify following current SBA regulations. There are currently four SBA-approved TPCs. They are:        El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce        National Women Business Owners Corporation        US Women’s Chamber of Commerce        Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) You can learn more about the requirements for the government’s woman-owned small business certification requirements on the SBA’s website. Being an entrepreneur is exciting but also presents its unique challenges. Financing can be a significant obstacle that is often not easy to overcome. However, the more money you have at your disposal, the more options available to make sure your business is on the right path to success. Unfortunately, many companies never properly explore the field of government grants. Instead, they assume they do not qualify for grants and never even try to apply. Registering With SAM Directory Also Gives You Access To Valuable Grants Government grants are similar to free money from the government that you do not have to pay back. However, you have to register in SAM before applying for Federal Grants. For example, here is a listing of the best government grants for women: Grants.gov National Association for the Self-Employed Growth Grants Eileen Fisher Women-Owned Business Grant Program Amber Grant IdeaCafe Grant #GIRLBOSS Foundation Grant Cartier Women’s Initiative Award GrantsforWomen.org FedEx Small Business Grant Read our article, Government Grants, A Guide to Free Money! to learn more about how registering for SAM can help provide great funding opportunities for your business. What is a Government Grant? A government grant is a financial award given by the federal, state, or local government authority for a worthwhile project. It is a gift that does not include technical assistance or other financial assistance, such as a loan or loan guarantee, an interest rate subsidy, direct appropriation, or revenue sharing. The grantee is not expected to repay the money. Why is the government giving away free money? Innovation and ingenuity are essential to any society. For any economy to be competitive in the modern world, it must open up avenues to grow and nurture new businesses. To put it simply, the government gives out grants because it serves the greater good to suit the needs of the people. Grants are a great way to even the playing field. We have all heard stories about great entrepreneurs with relatively humble beginnings. Grants are in place because few people have the capital to start a business without some assistance. This is particularly true for minorities and women who might have faced discrimination in the past that hindered them from pursuing their business goals. In truth, grants can be very competitive. It is important to read instructions to understand the application process thoroughly. You do not want your grant application to be thrown out because you did not provide the correct paperwork or information. A small business should also be aware of deadlines. However, please do not let a challenging application dissuade you from trying to qualify for grants. There is nothing more accurate than the saying about never making any of the shots you don’t take. Some websites can help you through the process. What Is The SAM Directory? SAM stands for System Award Management. How Small Businesses Can Challenge Government Contracting Decisions

Protesting A Bid Or Award You must be an interested party, which means a prospective bidder who will be affected by the award economically. This usually means you will receive the award if your protests are sustained. One such challenge would be that the bid was defective. A defective bid can include the following: The omission of a required provision The ambiguity of Important facts Indefinite evaluation factors. The termination of a contract may also be protested if the protest alleges that the termination was based on improprieties in the award of the contract. This means that you can protest the bid, award, or termination of the contract. Make sure that you are very aware of the deadlines set for a protest. Protesting  A Defective Bid These are some common grounds for a defective bid: The bid is not detailed enough or vague: It’s too detailed: SOW too long It’s too restrictive: it uses standards or specs that are not needed. More time is needed to respond. It contains ambiguous statements: which do you want? There are many brand names or equal issues. There are small business issues: such as Hubzone and wrong size standard Failure to meet small business set-asides Procedures Of Protest The government wants to ensure that public funds are utilized in a manner that is fair. This means that protests to solicitations will be handled as quickly and efficiently as possible. So the government encourages all parties to resolve issues with contracting officers of the agency with open discussion. The agency is also encouraged to resolve these matters in a fair and efficient manner. What Of The Timing Of The Protest In The Contracting Process? A protest received before the award of the contract means that the contract will not be awarded until there is a decision on the protest. This is bypassed if the items or services of the contract are urgently needed, and a delay in performance will cause unneeded harm.  If the protest is received within ten days of the award of the contract, then the performance of the contract will be suspended until the protest is resolved. It is on the contracting officer to notify all the other eligible parties affected by this suspension of performance due to the protest. If a protest is received ten days after the contract is awarded, the agency procedures will determine the handling of the protest. The contract performance might not be suspended or terminated in these cases unless it is likely that the award will be invalidated and the delay will not be prejudicial to the government’s interest. General Accounting Office Although it is highly encouraged that companies seek resolution within the contracting agency, if this proves ineffective, then a company can file a protest with the General Accounting Office or GAO.  However, you must understand that if you totally bypass the agency and go to the GAO, then the GAO’s decision is final. This means that you will not be allowed to appeal the GAO, and this ruling will be final. This means that it is usually more advantageous for a company to go through the contracting agency than to go directly to the GAO. Going through the original agency also allows a company more time to gather the information that can help if later protests go to another type of forum. Matters that can not be protested to the GAO: An affirmative determination of responsibility by the contracting officer — A determination that a bidder is capable of performing a contract will not be reviewed unless there is a showing of possible bad faith on the part of government officials or that definitive responsibility criterion in the solicitation was not met. Procurement integrity — Protests not filed within the required time limits Make sure you read the second part of this series to find out more about disputing or protesting a contract award. What Is The Difference Between A Protest vs. A Dispute? A protest involves a defective bid or awarding a contract to a different bidder. In contrast, a dispute consists of an issue with the contracting officer that arises after you have been awarded the government contract. The following are the three Federal Bid protest Levels: Judicial action was brought to the United States Court of Federal Claims (COFC). Protest filed with the (GAO) Government Accountability Office. An agency-Level objection was filed with the agency conducting the procurement. It is important to note that a protest must be filed within ten days after the basis of the rally is known or should be known. Any objections that exceed this 10-day limit will automatically be thrown out. If you want to go forward, you must go to a higher level, like the United States Court of Federal Claims. Decision To Protest If you decide to protest, it is in your best interest to call counsel as soon as possible. Contract law can be very complicated, and it would be an excellent idea to consult with your legal counsel.  If you decide to protest, you have avenues that can guide you through the process.  You can go to your local PTAC to get started in the process and seek legal counsel. You also should familiarize yourself with Part 33.1 of the FAR. This will help you understand the requirements and your rights. Disputes A dispute is when a government contractor has issues or material disagreements related to the contract itself and therefore files a claim. A claim is defined as a demand by one of the contracting parties seeking, as a matter of right, the payment of money, the adjustment or interpretation of contract terms, including the time of performance. This also includes other relief under or relating to the contract.” How Do You Get Started Working With The Government? SAM stands for System Award Management. Why Subcontracting Is A Smart Way For Small Businesses To Begin Working For The Federal Government

What is a subcontractor? A government subcontractor is defined by Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 3.502-1 as: Any person, other than the prime contractor, who offers to furnish or furnishes any supplies, materials, equipment, or services of any kind under a prime contract or a subcontract entered into in connection with such excellent agreement and includes any person who offers to furnish or furnishes general supplies to the prime contract or a higher tier subcontractor. A prime contractor contracts directly with the client, which in this case is the federal government.  The subcontractor would agree with the prime contractor (prime) to provide goods and services to the peak for them to be able to fulfill the requirements of the original government contract. This is an excellent opportunity for the subcontractor to gain valuable experience with government contracting and build their reputation with various government agencies. Useful Definitions Prime contractor — The business wins to bid for a contract with the government. Higher-tier subcontractor — a subcontractor that contracts other subcontractors to perform services or provide supplies to complete work for the contracts they have entered into with prime contractors. Consultants — It is easy to confuse consultants with subcontractors. Consultant services are defined by Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) as “rendered by persons who are members of a particular profession or possess a special skill and who are not officers or employees of the contractor. Examples include those services acquired by a contractor or subcontractor to enhance their legal, economic, financial, or technical positions. Professional and consultant services are generally acquired to obtain information, advice, opinions, alternatives, conclusions, recommendations, training, or direct assistance, such as studies, analyses, evaluations, liaison with Government officials, or other forms of representation.” How Does A Small Business Become A Subcontractor? One of the first things one needs to do is register with  SAM. SAM stands for System Award Management. To do business with the federal government, you must register your business in the System for Award Management directory. The government will not hire any type of business (large or small) that has not been written in the SAM directory. Please read one of the helpful blog articles on our site, Everything You Need to Know About SAM for Small Businesses.  These blogs will help give you all the information you need to understand how we can help make the process easy for you. In addition, Sam Directory will happily guide you through this often confusing process. Subcontracting Can Be A Great Opportunity To Get Into Working With The Government We have already discussed how the United States government is one of the most potent consumers globally, and government contracting is a lucrative billion-dollar marketplace. However, if you are a reasonably new business, it might be wiser to begin as a government subcontractor.  This means that you are working with a prime contractor working directly with the government instead of itself. A good working relationship with a prime contractor can help you gain experience and knowledge that is always valuable to young companies. In addition, it helps you access how ready your business is to take on the challenge of government contracting.  Subcontracting Has Many Advantages For Less Experienced Businesses Subcontracting with a prime contractor rather than the government means you do not have to worry about the strict rules and regulations of working directly with the government. The subcontractor is answerable to the prime contractor, not the government. Luckily, prime contractors are always looking for companies that can help them complete these critical government projects. Federal Contracting Also Makes Prime Contractors Want To Seek Out Traditionally Disadvantaged Businesses This means that prime contractors are looking for qualified businesses owned by women, minorities, and veterans. This provides these groups with federal contracting opportunities that might not be available in other markets. Also, it is not unusual for prime contractors to be very loyal to their subcontractors and give them several avenues for repeat business. These are unique relationships, and firms should develop a strategy for approaching these potential partners. So, How Does A Small Business Successfully Start Relationships With Key Government Contractors? The first step is to become familiar with the government marketplace. Do your research and become familiar with the terms commonly used in that industry. Then study the different regulations and become certified with the government, if necessary. You could also attend government trade shows better to understand the needs of particular government and state agencies. This will help you identify prime contractors’ needs and any niches your business could fill. Locate Key Prime Contractors Federal prime contractors can be found at this Small Business Administration site at this site: https://www.sba.gov/document/support–directory-federal-government-prime-contractors-subcontracting-plans. This directory is an excellent place for small businesses to find prime contractors who are looking to fill subcontracting requirements for government contracts. Companies can also go to http://web.sba.gov/subnet/ to find prime contractors who directly announce what their needs are for their current jobs for the government. This is an excellent tool for identifying a prime contractor that will make a good match for your business. Develop A Strategy Do not be too broad about what your company can do. Outline to the prime contractor how you are the best choice for the job. Define your niche. This Is Not The Time To Be Shy About Your Company’s Accomplishments Inform them about any awards or certifications that you have received. Tell them how you have a strong reputation and reference any contracts you helped complete. This is the time to position yourself as an asset to their project and inform them about your capabilities. These are things that help build credibility as a subcontractor. Remember That You Are Forming A Long-Term Relationship, And This Is Not Just A One-Time Gig You want to develop a strong alliance with the prime contractor’s company. It is on you to suggest teaming arrangements that will benefit your businesses. Ensure the understanding helps promote your company to other prime contractors and the government agency funding the project. Remember,… Continue reading Why Subcontracting Is A Smart Way For Small Businesses To Begin Working For The Federal Government

The money will be much more satisfying and you will be motivated and challenged in a whole new way. How To Know If Your Small Business Can Qualify To Be A Federal Contractor

Special Consideration In many markets, small businesses are often outcompeted by larger organizations that often have access to almost unlimited resources. This set aside actually might increase a small business’s chances of winning a lucrative bid. The following is set as statutory rules to give small businesses a fair chance in the marketplace: 23 percent of prime contracts are reserved for small businesses; 5 percent of prime and subcontracts are reserved for small disadvantaged businesses; 5 percent of prime and subcontracts are reserved for women-owned small businesses; 3 percent of prime contracts are reserved for HUBZone small businesses; 3 percent of prime and subcontracts are reserved for service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. How Do I Know Government Contracting Is Right for My Company? There is very little certainty in business. Having a powerful client that is known for paying its bills on time, like our Federal Government, is a great asset. Also, many of your competitors might be dismissing the idea of being a government contractor as being too much trouble. This means that there could be surprisingly little competition in some spaces. Their shortsightedness can be your company’s advantage to get ahead and obtain some very lucrative contracts. Does Your Company Qualify As A Veteran Owned Business? To qualify for these set-asides a business must have the following: Meet small business size standard for primary NAICS code and contract At least 51% unconditionally and directly owned by veterans who are U.S. citizens* The veterans must manage the day-to-day operations The veterans must make long-term decisions for the business A veteran must hold the highest officer position The veterans  must work at the business full-time during normal working hours How Do You Prove That You Are A Veteran? You will need to have a Department of Defense Form 214 (DD 214), which is a document that is issued when a military service member retires, separates, or is discharged from the military.  You will need a letter from the United States Department of Veteran Affairs stating you are service-disabled if you also intend to apply for service-disabled status. The VA benefits office can help you if you need to replace a lost disability status letter. Minority-Owned Business Status Five percent of the Federal government contracts are supposed to be awarded to members of an economically or socially disadvantaged group. This allows minority groups to remain competitive in the government market. Under the Small Business Act, certain individuals are presumed socially disadvantaged:  African-Americans Hispanic Americans, Asian Pacific Americans Native Americans (American Indians, Eskimos, Aleuts, or Native Hawaiians) Subcontinent Asian Americans. An individual who is not a member of one of the groups listed can be admitted to the program if he/she shows – through a “preponderance of the evidence” – that he/she is socially disadvantaged. For instance, an individual may show social disadvantage due to race, ethnic origin, gender, physical handicap, long-term residence in an environment isolated from the mainstream of American society; or other similar causes. Registering For Minority Certification To qualify for the five percent of the contracts that are reserved for minority-owned or disadvantaged businesses, one must be certified by the government. This means that a business is giving up on 24 billion dollars worth of revenue by not registering. Registering also has other advantages. The SBA offers specialized training programs and mentoring to registered organizations, free of charge. You also get admitted to opportunity fairs and networking events through the National Minority Supplier Development Council. Before applying for the 8(a) Program, each firm is urged to take an on-line training and self-evaluation course that can be found here at the 8(a) Business Development Suitability Tool. The first section of the on-line course explains the 8(a) Program intimately. It culminates in an eligibility self-assessment test. The test consists of a series of straightforward yes/no questions that evaluate the degree to which your firm meets the essential qualifications for the 8(a) Program. If key eligibility criteria are not met, you will be directed to the SBA resource deemed most appropriate to help you at this time. Think About Subcontracting Subcontracting with a prime contractor rather than the government means that you do not have to worry about the strict rules and regulations that are part of working directly with the government. This is because the subcontractor is answerable to the prime contractor, not the government. Luckily, prime contractors are always on the lookout for companies that can help them complete these important government projects. Subcontracting has many advantages for less experienced businesses. SAM Directory Can Help Remember, registering for the SAM directory gives a business automatic entry into the extremely lucrative marketplace of the federal government. It is also a crucial step for applying for rewarding government grants that can help your business reach its full potential.  Let us, the professionals at SAM Directory, make sure that you do all that is needed to not miss out on this important opportunity. What Is The SAM Directory, And How Does It Help Your Small Business?

Why does my business need to register for the SAM Directory? What if I told you that your business has a large revenue base that is often untapped in many areas and, therefore, might have very little competition in your field? You might be wondering if this magical source of revenue lives in the land of rainbows and unicorns. The good news is that this is nothing more or less than the United States Federal Government, one of the largest, most powerful purchasers of goods and services in the entire world. Our Federal Government provides a lucrative business opportunity that no small business can afford to ignore. What Is Government Contracting? Government contracting is when specific government agencies contract with private companies for specific goods or services. The agencies usually put out a contract or often a request for proposal (RFP) and various companies can place bids for the project. Once an agency selects a particular business, a contract is signed, and that business is now considered a government contractor. The Federal Government Offers Great Opportunities For Many Types Of Businesses The government actually designates a portion of the contracts for women-owned small businesses, small disadvantaged businesses, companies within historically underutilized business zones (HUBZone), and service-disabled, veteran-owned small organizations. This allows underserved groups to have a real chance to get awarded lucrative government contracts. However, it is important to be aware of certain elements of government contracting culture in order to be more effective and get more contracting opportunities. Can a Small Business really hope to compete for federal government contracts? The Federal Government is required to reward a certain amount of its contract to small businesses. In fact, last year the Federal government awarded 25% of its contracts to small businesses. In 2018 the U.S. Small Business Administration announced that the Federal government awarded a total of $105.7 Billion worth of contracts for goods and services to small businesses. Government Contracts Are A Strategy For Small Business Success

Innovation Is Key The government needs to be very careful about how it handles the money that taxpayers provide. They are tasked with ensuring things go smoothly and no unnecessary risks are taken. This is a great opportunity for a small business that prides itself on finding innovative solutions to age-old problems. Your new ways of doing things could be just the thing to make you stand apart from the other companies vying for the same opportunity. They are particularly keen to listen to ideas that have been proven in the private sector. Flex Your Expertise This is not the time to be shy about your business’s accomplishments. Being a small business does not automatically mean you are the competition’s underdog. Bigger is certainly not always better.  Small businesses can often prove to be more agile and efficient and have better response times when compared to their larger counterparts. A larger organization might not have the flexibility to pivot the way you can, which allows small businesses to be able to think on their feet during crises. Smaller companies can also provide more personalized customer services, which all consumers appreciate. Narrow In On The Customer’s Needs The United States government is a customer just like any other. However, this customer has deep pockets and unlimited needs. A small business can cater to the government by following a strategy in which the customer’s needs always come first. Identify the government agency’s pain points and offer them your innovative solutions to their problems. This type of discipline always wins big points with the government. Be Precise And Follow Directions Naturally, the government is a stickler for following rules and regulations. It is shocking how many bids get tossed out because companies need to follow basic directions. Be aware of deadlines, and do not leave anything black when filling out forms. The request for proposals or RFPs has very specific instructions, and you must take everything seriously. Just consider it like filing your income taxes, and do not take unnecessary shortcuts. Be Strategic In Which Agencies That You Target Covid-19 has not had a major impact on government spending. In 2020, over 1.55 trillion dollars were spent on just Covid response efforts. This increase in spending has made the budgets for 2021 higher for several agencies. The Department of Defense has increased its budget by 800 million dollars compared to 2020. NASA has requested a 12 percent increase in its agency funding, and the Veteran Administration agencies asked for 14 percent more money in 2021. It is a great idea to strategically target agencies experiencing this type of budget boom to secure government contracts. Streamlining and Modernizing Information Technology Did you know that the Internal Revenue Service, the Veteran’s Affairs Department, Defense Department, and the Transportation Department are operating on computer systems over 50 years old? Some still use 1970 IBM mainframe computers that store information on floppy disks! This has caused the government to pass the Modernizing Government Technology Act, also known as the MGT. The MGT has authorized 100 hundred million dollars to modernize the federal government’s Information Technology systems in 2018. Then another 150 million dollars were added to the MGT in 2019. The Consolidated Appropriations Act added billions of dollars to upgrade the government’s I.T. systems and update infrastructure. So small businesses that can help the government reduce redundancies, save money, and streamline government technology have a great chance of obtaining very profitable government contracts in 2020 and beyond. There Will Be An Increase In IT Spending The demand for information technology services in the federal government has created ample opportunities for companies in this field. More and more companies are doing away with having local servers and personal devices to handle modern software applications. Now more than ever, companies are relying on cloud computing to maintain multiple copies of the data to mitigate instances of security threats, data loss, and data breaches. The government is no exception. They understand that cloud computing will lower costs significantly and help them manage their data more efficiently. Small businesses that understand how to utilize cloud computing should be in a very good position to cash in on this new wave of data management architecture. Cyber Security Will Also Be A Lucrative Field As the world becomes increasingly higher-tech, security breaches are more likely to be in data management than on the battlefields. The government needs to stay several steps ahead of those who wish to exploit undiscovered vulnerabilities in our systems. This is why cybersecurity will be a very lucrative area for government contractors. This is particularly true in 2020, which will be an election year. Cybersecurity will be used to protect voter databases and voting machines. Cybersecurity is also going to be a big part of government protection when it comes to cyberattacks on supply chains. Contractors that can help manage these constant threats to government security will be in high demand. Make Sure You Get A CAGE Code (Commercial and Government Entity) This code is five characters and unique to your business. It’s your ID code, and government agencies will identify your business using this code. It is a bit like a social security number for your business. If your business includes more than one facility, then you will need multiple CAGE codes. Each location must have its unique code, and each location must be registered separately with SAM. How Do You Get Started Working With The Government? SAM stands for System Award Management.
